These sprites are included in standalone Sonic 3, which isn't too surprising when you consider how Flying Battery Zone was originally meant to appear earlier in the game. What's surprising is how they're identical to the sprites later found in Sonic & Knuckles. It seems like a rough version of the animation was first cobbled together, but then the stage itself got canned before the sprites were polished up, and eventually they just forgot about the whole thing.
Particularly interesting is the first frame, which doesn't share much of a likeness with the rest of the Sonic 3 sprites, but is more or less a perfect match for the standing sprite from Sonic 2.
This is probably holdover from the days where Sonic was still using adapted versions of his Sonic 2 sprites, suggesting that at one point they weren't just placeholders, but actually part of the game's design.
Apparently Tails's sprites for the Flying Battery Zone monkey bars are in the Sonic 3 part of the game, so it seems the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge references the Tails sprites from the Sonic 3 cartridges, rather than putting it in the S&K cartridge like animations that actually do have a point in being in S3&K only, such as the "running around a pillar" sprites in Lava Reef and Sky Sanctuary. Given how Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, and Sandopolis have level select entries and sprites for Sonic and Tails to be referenced in those levels, I am going to guess that those levels, being earlier in the game than Lava Reef and following zones, were worked on the earliest.
ReplyDeleteA bit unrealated, but is there a reason there is a duplicate of the Sonic's falling animation? Also, that Retro secrets page really needs updated.
ReplyDeleteI remember pointing this out months ago while playing the Saturn port on Sonic Jam, then making edited sprites to fit more in with Sonic 3, as well as redoing some of Sonic 3 Complete's sprites, like the snowboarding.
ReplyDeleteAre you That One Jig?
DeleteAlso, if you look at the shoes in some frames, they seem more akin to Sonic 2!
